What is the Sidewalk Project?
Sidewalk is an 8-session workshop on performance art where participants explore the medium, develop their own performance ideas, and bring them to life. Throughout the program, we learn about performance as a form of self-expression, experiment with different approaches, and refine our concepts. Our final works are documented, edited, and showcased in a public exhibition.
Rooted in collaborative creativity and community engagement, Sidewalk is a space for reimagining the connection between art and life. It’s designed for those without a prior professional background in the arts. By engaging with Vantaa’s urban landscape, participants transform their personal experiences into meaningful performances.
This year, we are collaborating with the City of Vantaa and Kaupunkikulttuurikeskus Mosaiikki to bring this project to life. The first edition of Sidewalk took place in collaboration with Artsi Museum in 2024 in Vantaa. Read more here(Link)
The Other Side performance art platform and the Sidewalk project are funded by The Kone Foundation.
What is Performance Art?
Performance art is a contemporary art form where artists use their bodies, actions, and sometimes audience participation to create unique, live experiences. It blends movement, objects, sound, and visuals to express emotions, ideas, or messages—often challenging traditional boundaries of art.
What Are You Signing Up For?
This is a great opportunity to dive into the world of contemporary art through performance art. You'll not only learn about this dynamic medium but also conceptualize, create, and showcase your own performance at an esteemed venue.
Participants selected through the open call will take part in workshops led by the mentor of Sidewalk 2025, performance artist and educator Diana Soria Hernández. You will be introduced to performance art, learn foundational concepts, and develop your ideas throughout the workshops. This year we are thrilled to have distinguished artists and educators, Roi Vaara (FI), Pancho López (MX) Gustaf Broms(SE), Leena Kela(FI) as guest lecturers of the sidewalk project.
After the workshops, you will have a one-on-one meeting with the mentor of the Sidewalk project and The Other Side team. Together, you'll refine your idea and go over the practical aspects of your work.
Once your concept is ready, you can select a time slot to film your performance. A professional filming crew, equipped with everything you need, will be there to bring your vision to life.
Afterward, The Other Side team will take over post-production and editing to finalize your video performances for the exhibition in autumn 2025.
See last year's exhibition documentation here.
