Positioned at the intersection of art and urban living, this project offers a unique platform for the conceptualization and execution of video performances, specifically designed to foster collaboration between local residents and broader audiences without prior expertise in art. 20.4 - 13:00 to 16:00 - INTRODUCTION

What is the concept? What is Performance Art? A brief history of Performance art. Ritual. Happening. Executing a concept as performance/action embedded in the given context (time, space, and other given conditions). Performance as a processual discipline. Tero Nauha will give an artist talk about his practice with a focus on ‘conceptual art/performance art.

21.4 - 13:00 to 16:00 - TIME

Performance is a time-based form of art. Short action (limitation of time). Microcosmos. How to start an action? How to end it? Roi Vaara will give an artist talk about his practice with a focus on ‘concept/filtering and selecting the right ideas / how to implement a concept using only the means necessary to realize it’.

27.4 - 13:00 to 16:00 - TIME

Durational performance. Timing. Rhythm. Pace. Repetition and multiplication. Creating a situational frame. John Court will give an artist talk about his practice with a focus on ‘concept/duration/composition in space’.

28.4 - 13:00 to 16:00 - SPACE

Performance as a composition in a space (horizontal/vertical/diagonal arrangements). Limitation of space. Living the performance art.

Nathalie Anguezomo Mba Bikoro will give an artist talk about her practice with a focus on ‘performance art/action art as a political statement and form of resistance’.

4.5 - 13:00 to 16:00 - SPACE

Site-specificity, Indoor/outdoor. Public space. How do you choose the right space for an idea? Annexation of space. Vishnu Vardhani Rajan will give an artist talk about her practice with a focus on ‘spoken word in performance/poetry in activism’.

5.5 - 13:00 to 16:00 - METHODS / STRATEGIES

Performance as a shared experience. Collective performance, collaboration, interactive happening, activating audience. Spoken word. Sound. Influences from other art disciplines. (How is performance different from other forms? Does it have to be? Who decides?)

Irma Optimisti will give an artist talk about her practice with a focus on ‘concept and 'drawing on experience from other professions or areas of life'

11.5 - 13:00 to 16:00 - THE BODY AND THE ARTIST PRESENCE:

Who/What performs? How to represent a body? Is the body political?

Forms of performance art as a way of thinking. Acting vs doing and being. The role of the spectator (does performance art need a spectator?) Kira O'Reilly will give an artist talk about her practice with a focus on Concept, body, and presence.

12.5 - 13:00 to 16:00 - DOCUMENTATION

Photo and video documentation. How to document a live-action? Is it possible to document performance? What can be documented? What cannot be documented? Video documentation versus performance for the camera.

15.5 - 14:00- 17:30 - VISITING ARTSI MUSEUM

Visiting the Artsi Museum together for Ida Sofia Fleming and Joonas Outakoski's performances as part of the exhibition My Home Somewhere.

Phase 2: Production & Post-production

Production of the performances will take place between 27th May and 9th June. The participants will be able to choose their time slots on these dates.

The Other Side will be responsible for the post-production of the works and preparing them for the exhibition.

Phase 3: Exhibition

The outcome of the Sidewalk project will be on display at K Galleria from 11th October to 29th December.

Hyvät Vantaan asukkaat, liittykää mukaan tähän taiteelliseen matkaan, jossa ainutlaatuinen äänenne tulee olemaan tärkeä osa Vantaan taiteellista ja kulttuurista kerrontaa. Elämänkokemuksenne on voimavaranne ja se on kaikki, mitä tarvitsette liittyäksenne projektiimme ja kehittääksenne tarvittavat taidot performanssitaiteen teosten luomiseen. Yhdistämällä ainutlaatuisen elämäntarinanne Sidewalk-projektista saatavan tiedon kanssa, paljastatte aidon ilmaisunne kielen.

The Other Side -alusta juhlii Vantaan 50-vuotisjuhlaa yhteistyössä Artsi-museon kanssa ja kutsuu teidät matkalle itseilmaisun ja luovuuden pariin performanssitaiteen yhteistyöllisen seikkailun kautta. Yhdessä tutkimme tätä taiteenmuotoa, luomme videoperformanssiteoksia ja esittelemme lopulliset työt Vantaan K Galleriassa lokakuusta 2024 alkaen.

Mikä on Sidewalk-projekti?

Sidewalk on projekti, joka perustuu yhteistyöhön, luovuuteen ja yhteisölliseen osallistumiseen. Sijaiten taiteen ja kaupunkielämän risteyksessä, tämä projekti tarjoaa ainutlaatuisen alustan videoperformanssien käsitteellistämiseen ja toteuttamiseen. Projekti on erityisesti suunniteltu edistämään yhteistyötä paikallisten asukkaiden ja laajemman yleisön välillä ilman aiempaa taidekokemusta. Sidewalk-projektin ydinajatuksena on, että jokaisella on ainutlaatuinen tarina kerrottavanaan. Projektissa kannustetaan osallistujia sukeltamaan elämänkokemuksiinsa ja vuorovaikutuksiinsa Vantaan kaupunkimaisemassa käyttäen performanssitaidetta kanavana yksilölliseen ilmaisuun ja tarinankerrontaan.

Mitä on performanssitaide?

Performanssitaide on nykytaiteen muoto, jossa taiteilijat käyttävät kehojaan, toimiaan ja joskus yleisön osallistumista luodakseen ainutlaatuisia kokemuksia. Se on kuin live-esitys, jossa taiteilija on sekä esiintyjä että teos itsessään, käyttäen liikettä, esineitä ja joskus ääntä sekä visuaalisia elementtejä viestien, tunteiden tai ideoiden välittämiseen. Performanssitaide haastaa usein käsitykset siitä, mitä taide voi olla, kutsuen katsojia ajattelemaan, tuntemaan ja osallistumaan hetkeen.

Mihin olet ilmoittautumassa?

Tämä on hieno tilaisuus sukeltaa nykytaiteen maailmaan performanssitaiteen kautta. Et ainoastaan opi tästä dynaamisesta taiteenmuodosta, vaan myös suunnittelet, luot ja esittelet luomuksesi arvostetussa K Galleriassa Vantaalla.

Avoimessa haussa valitut osallistujat osallistuvat Sidewalk 2024 -mentorin, performanssitaiteilijan ja kouluttajan, Tomasz Szraman, järjestämiin työpajoihin. Sinut johdatetaan performanssitaiteen maailmaan, opit tämän välineen peruskäsitteistä ja kehität ideoitasi työpajojen aikana.

Valintakriteerit:

Toivotamme kaikki tervetulleiksi tutkimaan luovaa potentiaaliaan tässä projektissa. Ulkopuolisia tuomaristoja tai pelottavia haastatteluja ei ole. Osallistujat valitaan VAIN heidän motivaationsa ja halunsa perusteella kokea taiteentekemisen prosessi ja erityisesti performanssitaide.

What is Performance Art?

Performance art is a form of contemporary art where artists use their bodies, actions, and sometimes audience participation to create unique experiences. It's like a live show where the artist is the performer and the artwork itself, uses movement, objects, and sometimes sound and visuals to convey messages, emotions, or ideas. Performance art often challenges the boundaries of what art can be, inviting viewers to think, feel, and participate in the moment.

What Are You Signing Up for?

This is a great opportunity for you to dive into the world of contemporary art through the medium of Performance Art. You'll not only learn about this dynamic art form but also conceptualize, create, and showcase your creation at the esteemed K Galleria in Vantaa.

Participants chosen through the open call will take part in workshops conducted by the mentor of Sidewalk 2024, Performance artist and educator, Tomasz Szrama. You will be introduced to Performance art, learn about foundational concepts in this medium, and develop your ideas during the workshops. This year we are thrilled to have distinguished artists and educators, Tero Nauha, Roi Vaara, John Court, Anguezomo Mba Bikoro, Vishnu Vardhani, Irma Optimisti, and Kira O'Reilly as our guest lecturers. Following the workshops, you'll have the freedom to select a date within a two-week time frame to bring your video performance to life. Rest assured, a professional filming crew, equipped with everything you need, will be at your disposal to capture your creative vision.

Next, we will assist you in the post-production and editing your works to get the final video performances ready for the exhibition in October 2024.

All Vantaa residents aged 18 and above are eligible to join the program.

  • Phase 2: Production and execution of Video Performances - 13th to 26th May (The participants will be able to choose their time slots)

Language

Workshops are conducted in English, However, Finnish translation would be available in required sessions.

Selection Criteria

We welcome all who are eager to explore their creative potential in this project. There won’t be external juries or intimidating interviews. Eligible participants are chosen ONLY based on their motivations for experiencing the art-making process and in particular performance art.

Terms and Conditions

  • The Participant must be over the age of 18 and a resident of Vantaa.

  • We follow safer space guidelines in our workshops and programs. Make sure you are aware and conscious about it.

  • The Participant must not engage in activities that may result in serious self-harm or harm to others. The Program mentor reserves the right to reject any ideas or interrupt processes that may endanger the health or safety of the Participant or others.

  • The Program and workshops will be documented through photographs and videos.

  • The Other Side reserves the right to use the produced work in different art events and exhibitions, with proper credit given to the Participant as the artist or producer of the work.

  • The participant can publish their work in other exhibitions, or screening platforms giving the necessary credits.
